Where CASE fits into Software Engineering.

• Database Fourth Generation Languages- Fourth generation languages are high-level languages with provide database access facilities. The 4GLs were predecessors to the CASE movement, having appeared several years prior to the firl tools. This however does not take away from their importance as a software development tool. 4GLs for datatbases are valuable and time saving tools.
  
  
• Data Modeling Tools- Data modeling techniques were developed to help database designers architect a database to be both versatile an as efficient as possible. They help model the information flow throughout, and construct appropriate viewpoints.
  
  
• Analysis and Design Specification Tools- These general-purpose specification and design tools can be used to specify and design almost any peice of software. Analysis and design tools usually implement data flow diagramming and strucutre charting techniques.
  
  
• User Interface Prototyping Tools- User Interface development is still and art, however these tools add value to the software development process during the requirements analysis and design specification stages. These tools help by reducing implementation risk and greatly enhanch end-user acceptance.
  
  
• Code Generation Tools- The holy grail of CASE Tools. Code generation is the ability to automatically generate compilabe software directly from the design specifications. However, true code generation is not available in any of today's general-purpose tools. Code generation is avaliable in focus tools, like in user interface design tools.
