To Hope
To hope is to dream
To dream is to do
And as we do, we hope better.
To Learn
To learn is to want to know.
To know is to understand.
And as we understand we learn.
To My Partner
Portia,
Eminent, compassion, discerning gentlewoman. When you walk the ground is blessed.
Those who you court are twice blessed. To borrow a prose, Amen, amen! but come
what sorrow can, It cannot countervail the exchange of joy That one short minute
gives me in her sight: Do thou but close our hands with holy words,
Then love-devouring death do what he dare; It is enough I may but call her mine.
But are you mine? For why would I want to keep such a flower? Of course a rose one
desires to have, No? But by removing the rose from the brush and making it mine, am
I doing it any good? Will it not die in a sparse moment?
Ah, but why pick on just the wondrous rose? Can one not nurture and care for the
rose and the bush from which it sprang from? To watch it grow, to see it respond to
your care, to bring it up and defend it from harm. To assert, profess, and relay
one's love for that which is, no, not, mine but is our, our unalterable rapture.
This is what I covet. will it be so?

I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have
been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and
then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst
the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.
