This week, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/10\/1104194213\/russian-mcdonalds-rebrand-logo\">McDonald\u2019s divested locations reopened<\/a> sans the Big Mac. Just a side story related to another unfolding tragedy. Too much of the news these days gives one pause. Yet, the story of McDonald\u2019s closing in Russia focused my attention in a particular way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An op-ed article &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/opinion\/mcdonalds-exit-russia-ends-hopeful-era?fbclid=IwAR05ksSztuwOyLbCJ7vrqCALgylgsbpXPRMsIMJmijj_CEjFjZyQCu_TMkU\">McDonald&#8217;s exit from Russia ends a hopeful era<\/a> \u2013 notes the symbolism. It was the opening of the first McDonald\u2019s location in Moscow that signaled the transition of another era, the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_War\">Cold War<\/a>. The article includes a photo from the opening of that first outpost in Moscow\u2019s Pushkin Square in January 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have been to that very McDonald&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.chicagobusiness.com\/mcdonald.png?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D04164531435465780332025712756234905558%7CMCORGID%3D138FFF2554E6E7220A4C98C6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1653593699&amp;adobe_mc=MCMID%3D04164531435465780332025712756234905558%7CMCORGID%3D138FFF2554E6E7220A4C98C6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1653593709\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>AFP via Bloomberg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 18<sup>th<\/sup> of June 1992 &#8211; just 6 months after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mikhail_Gorbachev#Final_collapse\">Mikhail Gorbachev resigned<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boris_Yeltsin#President_of_the_Russian_Federation\">Boris Yeltsin became the president <\/a>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russia\">Russian Federation<\/a> \u2013 I, as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/People_to_People_Student_Ambassador_Program\">high school travel program<\/a>, was in Moscow. In a bit of cosmic chance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?26614-1\/welcoming-ceremony-yeltsin\">Boris Yeltsin was also \u201cin town\u201d for a summit with George H.W. The same parliamentary building 15 months later, photographed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Morris_(photographer)\">Christopher Morris<\/a>, after Yeltsin ordered the building to be shelled during <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1993_Russian_constitutional_crisis\">Russia&#8217;s constitutional crisis.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, during our trip Russia was experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyperinflation\">hyperinflation<\/a>. That June the exchange rate, which fluctuated rapidly each day \u2013 averaged around 1 U.S. dollar for 100 rubles<sup><a href=\"#sub2\">2<\/a><\/sup>. The net result for us was, while we had been briefed to bring Western consumer goods with us (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/stridewise.com\/blue-jeans-cold-war\/#Tourists_profited_off_of_the_blue_jean_craze\">jeans<\/a>) to trade with, at most street markets Muscovites showed more interest in our dollars than our jeans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alas, the recent past has shown that the collective optimism of the 1990s formed from witnessing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_End_of_History_and_the_Last_Man\">end of history<\/a> was but a false sense of security. The seeds of trouble for this new millennium, from 9\/11 to Putin&#8217;s Russia took root while we all imagined a better world.
