Now that Apple has officially sent out
\ninvitations<\/a> to various members of the media to “Come see our latest
\ncreation” next week, January 27th<\/sup>, at the Yerba Buena
\nCenter for the Arts<\/a> in San Francisco, let us consider what exactly
\nthat creation will be.<\/p>\n

Apple’s Invite<\/i><\/p>\n

iTablet<\/b><\/p>\n

iTablet, iSlate, uSlate, whatever the
\nname affixed to the device will be Apple will most certainly be rolling
\nout a tablet-sized mobile computing device. For the most part I agree
\nwith tech-writer Andy Ihnatko<\/a> in terms of the devices hardware
\nconfiguration<\/a>, will have data access via WiFi and cellular, 10”
\nmultitouch screen, a solid state drive (SSD) – but I think it will
\nbe of a larger capacity than 32 GB), et al.<\/p>\n

I also agree, for the most part, on
\nAndy’s comments about functionality. The UI will be designed for the
\nissues of carrying and working with a 10” slab of computing hardware
\n– on the go – “Think about how a user interface would have to
\nincorporate those observations. Now imagine that you’ve been doing
\nthis experiment for four years and not four minutes. That’s a very
\nlong list of observations. If you didn’t come up with a workable
\nsolution, don’t worry: I think Apple has”, after all Apple has
\nbeen applying for a number of patents over the years on this very issue.<\/p>\n

Ok fine, but what exactly will it do?
\nWhat will you need it for?<\/p>\n

Well, I’m glad you asked, because those
\nare very important questions, as AppleInsider recently noted<\/a>. In the
\nlong history of hand-held sized computing, there is a very short list
\nof market-wins, PDAs<\/a>, such as the Palm Pilot, MP3 devices such as the
\niPod and smartphones, such as the Blackberry.<\/p>\n

That is it.<\/p>\n

\n

Apple’s Newton<\/a> was an amazing
\ntechnology for the time, but was oversized and overpriced as a
\npersonal organizer. Microsoft<\/a>‘s Tablet PC never really got the
\nthird-party software support it need for the form factor to find a
\nhome1<\/sup><\/a>
\nand as AppleInsider recounts history’s trash-bin is littered with
\ncompanies and devices that never even made it that far into the
\npublic conciseness.<\/p>\n

So as history as our guide, for it to
\nmake its way in the world, Apple’s iTablet will need to definitely
\nanswer the question, what can I use it for?<\/p>\n
