For the most part I agree<br \/>\nwith tech-writer <a href=\"http:\/\/ihnatko.com\/\">Andy Ihnatko<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/technology\/ihnatko\/1980077,ihnatko-apple-tablet-microsoft-010710.article\">terms of the devices hardware<br \/>\nconfiguration<\/a>, will have data access via WiFi and cellular, 10&#8221;<br \/>\nmultitouch screen, a solid state drive (SSD) &#8211; but I think it will<br \/>\nbe of a larger capacity than 32 GB), et al.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">I also agree, for the most part, on<br \/>\nAndy&#8217;s comments about functionality. The UI will be designed for the<br \/>\nissues of carrying and working with a 10&#8221; slab of computing hardware<br \/>\n&#8211; on the go &#8211; &#8220;Think about how a user interface would have to<br \/>\nincorporate those observations. Now imagine that you&#8217;ve been doing<br \/>\nthis experiment for four years and not four minutes. That&#8217;s a very<br \/>\nlong list of observations. If you didn&#8217;t come up with a workable<br \/>\nsolution, don&#8217;t worry: I think Apple has&#8221;, after all Apple has<br \/>\nbeen applying for a number of patents over the years on this very issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pdw.weinstein.org\/files\/patentlyapple.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"patentlyapple.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/pdw.weinstein.org\/assets_c\/2010\/01\/patentlyapple-thumb-400x236-281.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"236\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0 auto 20px;\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patentlyapple.com\/patently-apple\/2010\/01\/apple-the-tablet-prophecies.html\"><\/a>Patently Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"\">Apple: The Tablet Prophecies<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Ok fine, but what exactly will it do?<br \/>\nWhat will you need it for?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Well, I&#8217;m glad you asked, because those<br \/>\nare very important questions, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appleinsider.com\/articles\/10\/01\/15\/the_inside_track_on_apples_tablet_a_history_of_tablet_computing.html&amp;page=1\">AppleInsider recently noted<\/a>. In the<br \/>\nlong history of hand-held sized computing, there is a very short list<br \/>\nof market-wins, <a class=\"zem_slink rdfa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personal_digital_assistant\" title=\"Personal digital assistant\" rel=\"ctag:means wikipedia\" xmlns:ctag=\"http:\/\/commontag.org\/ns#\" typeof=\"ctag:Tag\" resource=\"http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/en\/personal_digital_assistant\" property=\"ctag:label\">PDAs<\/a>, such as the Palm Pilot, MP3 devices such as the<br \/>\niPod and smartphones, such as the Blackberry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">That is it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newton_(platform)\">Newton<\/a> was an amazing<br \/>\ntechnology for the time, but was oversized and overpriced as a<br \/>\npersonal organizer. <a class=\"zem_slink rdfa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\" title=\"Microsoft\" rel=\"ctag:means homepage\" xmlns:ctag=\"http:\/\/commontag.org\/ns#\" typeof=\"ctag:Tag\" resource=\"http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/en\/microsoft\" property=\"ctag:label\">Microsoft<\/a>&#8216;s Tablet PC never really got the<br \/>\nthird-party software support it need for the form factor to find a<br \/>\nhome<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><br \/>\nand as AppleInsider recounts history&#8217;s trash-bin is littered with<br \/>\ncompanies and devices that never even made it that far into the<br \/>\npublic conciseness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">So as history as our guide, for it to<br \/>\nmake its way in the world, Apple&#8217;s iTablet will need to definitely<br \/>\nanswer the question, what can I use it for?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Well let us consider the key feature of<br \/>\nApple&#8217;s other <a class=\"zem_slink rdfa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mobile_device\" title=\"Mobile device\" rel=\"ctag:means wikipedia\" xmlns:ctag=\"http:\/\/commontag.org\/ns#\" typeof=\"ctag:Tag\" resource=\"http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/en\/handheld_device\" property=\"ctag:label\">hand-held devices<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">iPod is for Entertainment &#8211; First<br \/>\nfor music on the go, followed by video on the go (watching video first, now watching and shooting video) and games (with the iPod Touch)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><a class=\"zem_slink rdfa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone\" title=\"iPhone\" rel=\"ctag:means homepage\" xmlns:ctag=\"http:\/\/commontag.org\/ns#\" typeof=\"ctag:Tag\" resource=\"http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/en\/iphone\" property=\"ctag:label\">iPhone<\/a> is for Communication &#8211;<br \/>\nYes of course there is an App for that, but even before the App<br \/>\nstore the iPhone was about communication: Voice, Text (Email, SMS)<br \/>\nand Web<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">So the iTablet will be about &#8230;<br \/>\nProductivity!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">But wait, I hear, what about those<br \/>\nrumors about print publication and eReaders? And, I hear you say you already have a<br \/>\nmobile device for productivity, your laptop?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Why yes, a laptop is for<br \/>\nproductivity on the go, and Apple is looking to redefine what a mobile<br \/>\nproductivity device is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Consider, what are the problems with using<br \/>\na laptop? It&#8217;s heavy and cumbersome to carry, doesn&#8217;t have access to<br \/>\ncellular networks by default and it takes a long time to start up and<br \/>\nbe, well productive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">An iPhone on the only hand is always<br \/>\non, not just always turned on, but always connected. Your on the<br \/>\nroad, you get an important email and presto, your at work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">But wait,<br \/>\nthat email has an attachment, and 10 sheet spreadsheet and oh,<br \/>\nbother this graph is completely wrong and oh, look the formula is off<br \/>\nand, well guess you&#8217;ll have to boot up your latptop now while you<br \/>\nwait for your airplane. Good luck finding a power outlet that hasn&#8217;t<br \/>\nalready be staked out by some other traveler.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">But if you take the strengths of the<br \/>\nlaptop with that of the iPhone, well you get one hell of a productive device.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">This is nothing short of revolution!<br \/>\nThis is, after all, Steve Jobs&#8217; Apple!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Oh and that eReader stuff, that will<br \/>\njust be some App available in the App store. After all the iPhone was<br \/>\nnot only built on the success of the iPod, but incorporated the iPod&#8217;s key functionality as a secondary feature. The iTablet&#8217;s secondary<br \/>\nfeature, you&#8217;ll be able to purchase and run third-party iPhone and<br \/>\niTablet-specific apps too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\"><b>In The Pudding<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Granted this is speculation, my<br \/>\ninterpenetration of the various rumors that have been circulating<br \/>\nover the years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">If your looking for proof of this<br \/>\ninterpretation, I can&#8217;t offer you any, at the moment. I can however<br \/>\npoint to two interesting side rumors, that Apple has been working on<br \/>\na <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appleinsider.com\/articles\/09\/12\/27\/apple_recruiting_talent_for_iworks_transition_to_the_cloud.html\">new, web-based version of their productivity suite iWork<\/a> and that<br \/>\nthey recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appleinsider.com\/articles\/09\/06\/03\/north_carolina_greets_apple_and_1_billion_server_farm_project.html\">contracted to build a new data center in North Carolina<\/a> to support growing web-based &#8220;cloud computing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">Oh, and recall that Apple has recently reduce the number of laptops it sells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">That and of course <a href=\"http:\/\/pdw.weinstein.org\/2009\/11\/googles-chrome-os-in-2010.html\">Google&#8217;s netbook<br \/>\nrunning Chrome<\/a> and their web-based <a class=\"zem_slink rdfa\" href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\" title=\"Google Docs\" rel=\"ctag:means homepage\" xmlns:ctag=\"http:\/\/commontag.org\/ns#\" typeof=\"ctag:Tag\" resource=\"http:\/\/cb.semsol.org\/product\/google-docs.rdf#self\" property=\"ctag:label\">Google Docs<\/a> suite and well, if<br \/>\nApple announces a new, distributed version of iWorks next<br \/>\nweek alongside their shinny new tablet, I say, there is your proof that things are about to get very interesting&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<hr>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in\">\n<div id=\"sdfootnote1\">\n<p class=\"sdfootnote\"><a class=\"sdfootnotesym\" name=\"sdfootnote1sym\" href=\"#sdfootnote1anc\">1<\/a> Not<br \/>\nwishing to give up on anything, Microsoft, at CES, released<br \/>\nalongside HP their &#8220;Slate PC&#8221;, which represents &#8211; I suppose on<br \/>\nhow and what your counting &#8211; Microsoft&#8217;s third attempt at<br \/>\ntablet-like computing. Once upon a time the knock on Microsoft was<br \/>\nthey needed three revision to get something right &#8211; think Windows<br \/>\n3.1 &#8211; for marketplace&nbsp;success.
