Zine Fiends

Paul Weinstein

While putting together last month’s post on Webzine 2000, I tried locating a few local news articles from the time. Unfortunately, the combination of incomplete digital archives from the early 2000s and the decimation of local newspapers over the last decade complicated the search.

Naturally, while looking for something else this weekend, I found one of my saved copies. So here’s a quick snapshot of an article that appeared in the Oakland Tribune a little more than 20 years ago.

Bay Area business news, circa 2000

It’s a shame a digital version is not readily available. These articles from the business section for August 14th really capture the zeitgeist of the SF Bay Area near the peak of the dot-com boom.

In fact, that Enron article was the first item that caught my eye when I pulled the paper out from its storage space.

Yours truly, second from the left, bring up the rear

Of course, I can’t close without noting the reason I kept this particular newspaper, the photo of me, among my contemporaries of the time.
